In the immediate Grosseto hinterland, between the gentle Maremma hills overlooking the sea, Massa Marittima preserves in its historic center an incredible architectural complex in which all the buildings once necessary for the public life of the city in the communal era are gathered. This is Piazza del Duomo located in the highest point of the town so that to get there you have to go up along narrow streets paved in stone. The difficult path is rewarded by the splendid spectacle offered by the square. Here you can admire, raised on a series of steps, the Cathedral of San Cerbone dating back to the mid-twelfth century. Then there are the Palazzo Comunale, the Palazzo del Podestà, the Loggia del Mercato and not far away also the Zecca and the Public Source. The town has been documented since the tenth century but it is only in the period of greatest splendor when it was an independent municipality, from 1255 to 1337, that all the splendid buildings that we see today were built. Massa Marittima has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, a prize awarded to the towns of the hinterland with an extremely high quality tourist offer. The village is in fact immersed in the Metalliferous Hills of Grosseto National Park, a green area rich in minerals and very marked by the mining activity that took place there in the past. A wonderful place to go hiking and horse riding in close contact with nature and the local historical memory. Furthermore, Massa Marittima is separated from the sea just a few kilometers, the stretch of coast it overlooks is particularly clear and unspoiled.
