mine museum

The history of "Massa Metallorum" begins in the late Middle Ages. This village based its economy on the mining of pyrites, copper, silver and galena. The museum was erected in 1980, using the galleries, which were dug in the centre of Massa Marittima during the Second World War. In this route (700 m long) it is possible to see a show of miners' hard life: the museum has been completed with the cooperation of old miners and for this reason it is not only a list of work tools, but a real representation of that time. The route is easy for all ages.
Place: Follonica
